  • Group of friends

the location was fine; the price was fair

the first night the heat setting did not work on most heating units; it was 45 degrees and freezing... the second night they brought some heaters. We could tell: our luggage was gone through... nothing was missing

  • Family with children

It was very reasonable (Booked.net had a significantly lower rate than other reservation sites) and on the main hotel/motel drag. Close to Cannery Row and the Aquarium. Room was spacious enough with a full size tub/shower. Management was pleasant.

Walls conveyed sound a little too well. Not awful, but raised voices next door could be heard. Fortunately, at 3 am a call to the manager took care of this. (Although the room phone did not work and I had to call on my cell phone.) Breakfast was minimally pleasurable. Coffee not great, nor was "oj". Waffles had an off taste, althought making them fresh was cool. The butter was real, which was a pleasant surprise. We didn't expect better for the rate we paid in high-priced Monterey, so we were not displeased.

  • Family with children

Reservation info from Booked.net implied that child cribs were available. They had none. Control for the drain in the bathtub didn't work. Wasn't _bad_ but at the price, expected a bit more -- even at peak season in Monterey.

  • Older travelers

When we first pulled in the driveway the managers van was blocking the entrance, as there were offloading personal supplies. After sitting there for more than a minute being stared at by the managers children, one approached our vehicle (which was barely off the main roadway) and stated that there was no vacency. No sorry, just we don't have vacency and gave me a blank look. Only after telling them we had reservations did they reluctantly move their car so we could pull into the parking lot. The key they gave us didn't work and when went back to the check in another youth came back to the room with us to try the key. He couldn't get it to work either and went back inside and came back several minutes later and finally got the door open. When it did I was overwhelmed by the strong oder of what smelled like mothballs. My wife looked inside the room and her face changed from excited about our weekend to one of sheer disappointment. It was so strong all we could do was run inside and open the windows and leave. We went looking for any other motel we could find, but unfortunately everything was booked. Several hours later we relunctantely went back to our room. We had paid $259 a night + taxes ($289.00 total) to stay here and I had booked based on Howard Johnsons reputation. I had stayed in your chain before back east and they were nice. The room was incredibely small, and the furnishings old, outdated and dirty. There was mold and rust in the bathroom and the towels had small yellow stains on them and smelled very strongly of bleach. The mattress on the bed was horrible, you could feel the squeeky springs on your back. The tv was without cable channels and looked like something from the 80's. We couldn't find anything worth watching. There was only one small bottle of shampoo and 2 small bars of soap. No conditioner or lotion. For what I paid, I really was expecting a lot more.

  • Single

It was across from a very nice outdoor walking mall with a Whole Foods, good pizza place, and upscale shopping stores. It was also within a 5 minute drive to downtown and many of the tourist sights.

The owners who also served as the front desk contacts were unavailable, disorganized, and not particularly helpful. It was also a bit run-down looking. But, the room was comfortable enough. I would recommend it as a less affordable option but not as a first choice.

  • Older travelers

    Not much.

In the morning, I found some very uncomfortable bites and red spots on my legs. I thought they might be bed bug bites. It itched for days. I talked to the management and they said they did not have any other complaints from occupants of that room. I would not go back to this motel.

  • Family with children

The fact that for the price I expected a little more for the my money. Felt like I was at a motel 6. The hardwood floors make it very noisy if your at the bottom. There was mattresses stacked on the side of the building. Its an old weathered building that could use a big make over. Plus, thought I was paying one price for each night and it turned out when I got there the weekend was $20 more then had anticipated. So wasn't a great deal after all.

  • Family with children

Nice location - central to wharf, dining, and shopping.

Management was unfriendly, rude & argumentative. Our reservation stated checkout @ noon. At 11:50, while parking in the hotel lot, we received a call from management asking where we were and stating that we were going to be charged for another day due to our lack of courtesy for others. At this, both my husband and myself were dumbfounded...(?) I asked if the manager had a copy of my reservation, "of course I do" was her answer. She advised their posted sign superseeds anything i'd received from 'Booked.net' and she proceeded to argue this point, wanting me to agree she is right and said at least 4x "you are so inconsiderate!". Beware of this hotel. I am still so upset about this!

  • Couple

we got to take some good pictures at the pool.

    they gave our room away,

  • Couple

Very clean. Nice staff. Peacefull and quite neighberhood, nice breakfast. I trully recommend this hotel!

  • Older travelers

    Rooms were clean staff friendly

Walls were so thin when the maid was cleaning next door I thought it was in our room!

  • Older travelers

The Howard Johnson Monterey is an affordable clean hotel. Although on a busy road most rooms are located away from the traffic noise. Close to shops and facilities should you need supplies. If you are going into downtown Monterey there is plenty of parking or public transport to get you there.

  • Older travelers

It was nice but is in need of refurbishment. Very worn looking. Breakfast wasn't worth the trouble!

  • Couple

Room is nice and clean, and free parking!

    Breakfast is too simple

  • Older travelers

The room was clean, however the bed cover and blanket were dirty and we asked for a new blanket. The one we received was clean but had a hole in the middle! Only 6 hangers, should have at least 10 for a couple staying for a weekend. The decorating of the room was very limited . . . 2 pictures. The original smoke detector in the ceiling was removed and a new one was attached next to it, but the mechanics of the original were still there. They had 2 towels, wash cloths and hand towels . . . not any extra . . . plenty of room on the rack over the toilet for extra . . . would have liked that option. The free breakfast was fine, but no trays to carry back to room and no place to sit and eat . . . no covers for coffee . . . not real convenient. For the money, don't think we would stay there again.
